Zocor, generically known as simvastatin, is used as a cholesterol lowering drug that helps in blocking cholesterol production in the body. It aids in lowering low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol level as well as total cholesterol level in the body. High cholesterol may lead to different critical health complications including heart attack, stroke, and cardiovascular disorders. Although Zocor helps in protecting body from these types of complications, there are significant side effects of Zocor like other drugs for treating cholesterol.

Side Effects of Zocor

Many drugs offer side effects including Zocor for treating cholesterol which are simply hard to avoid. In rare conditions, Zocor may lead to such conditions that may turn into collapsing skeletal muscle tissue, which may eventually lead to kidney failure. The common symptoms are unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, muscle weakness, fever or flue symptoms and dark-colored urine. Doctors strongly discourage having Zocor and other cholesterol drugs for potential side effects especially at the time of pregnancy. Using Zocor during this time may lead to cause birth defects and may profoundly affect the fetal development in an adverse fashion.

If you are on Zocor medication while not following a well-planned low cholesterol diet, it is very unlikely that Zocor will be of any help in minimizing your LDL and total cholesterol level. In such case, like any other cholesterol drugs Zocor will offer side effects only without any kind of specific benefits. The common symptoms for Zocor include muscle pain, muscle weakness, nausea, constipation or diarrhea.

Other Significant Influencing Factors

Zocor should not be used if you are pregnant or suffering from kidney disease. If you have diabetes, hidden thyroid, or muscle disorder, you should not take Zocor prior consulting with doctor. In fact, it is always recommended to take doctor’s advice prior taking Zocor like any cholesterol drugs to avoid side effects. If you are planning to become pregnant, you must discuss it with your doctor. In case if you are using this medication, you are strictly advised to undergo effective form of birth control. Till date no sufficient data have been found in support of whether cholesterol drugs like Zocor have any side effects on breast feeding practices, but you should not consume Zocor without informing it to doctor if you are breast feeding your baby.

Zocor and other cholesterol drugs may interact adversely in some conditions. For example, if you are taking Zocor and at the same time you are having diet rich in fat and cholesterol, you certainly do not get any benefit from Zocor. You should abstain from taking alcohol when you are on Zocor medication because alcohol increases triglyceride level. In fact, alcohol has a strong adverse effect on kidney function if you are on Zocor medication during that period. In fact, grapefruit and grapefruit juice may pose harmful side effects if used with Zocor.

You must have heard about high cholesterol, but you may not be sure of how to discover if you have such a condition and it is not quite as straightforward as you may expect. However, it is usually found in persons that are in their forties, and in case you are in that age group, it would be a good idea to visit your doctor for a checkup, or you may want to test for it by using a disposable home test kit.

Use A Home Testing Kit

Using a home testing kit, you can find out what the levels of cholesterol in your body are and in case you find that you have high cholesterol, or close to it being high, it is time for you to visit your doctor who will then perform a more appropriate blood test to help pinpoint the exact level of cholesterol in your body including both good (HDL) or bad (LDL) cholesterol.

The first thing your doctor will advise you about when it is found that you have high cholesterol is to ask you to make changes to your lifestyle, though of course, each case will have its own merits and when there is exceptionally high cholesterol levels in your body, you may even need to take drugs for bringing down the levels to more manageable levels. It is however, normal for you to first be a borderline case and a simple change in your lifestyle should be sufficient as well as efficient enough to bring down the levels of your cholesterol problem.

Changing your lifestyle would warrant that you change what you eat and also take to living a more active life, and you may need to switch to eating lean meats that do not have much fat or skin and even switch to chicken and fish in order to bring down your cholesterol level rather than eat red meat or meats that are fatty such as lamb or pork. Also, it would also be necessary to switch from frying your food to baking or broiling, which is preferable as too is steaming, roasting or grilling your food.

In addition, you should also take plenty of exercises and running, walking as well as jogging and even dancing or other related activities can help bring down your high cholesterol levels and keep you in better shape. Of course, you need to start off in a small way and work your way up as you become more attuned to each level of exercise, and you can also get advice from your doctor in this regard. As a last resort, you may be prescribed medicines to bring down your high cholesterol levels and using Statins has gained in popularity which is quite effective in bringing down the level of cholesterol, though of course, this should be your last option.

Around twenty five percent of all deaths are attributable to heart disease caused by blocked or ‘furred up’ coronary (heart) arteries, a disease known as atherosclerosis that is brought on by raised blood cholesterol levels. A crucial element in heart disease is your way of life and what foods you eat.

Easygoing steps like following a 7 day detox plan, making sure you get some exercise, losing a few pounds and quitting smoking can play a big part in improving your chances of heart disease - you may also be interested to try using a foot detox to help mop up all those toxins flooding round your bloodstream.

Warning signs of heart disease

If you contract heart disease, you are at greater risk of developing angina (chest pain owing to the heart not being given adequate oxygen), a heart attack; an arrhythmia (which is an irregular heart beat, which does bring on breathlessness, lightheadedness or even death); or heart failure (when the heart cannot pump correctly, leading to shortness of breath, lethargy, swelled up ankles, and which could eventually cut short your life expectancy).

Coronary Artery Disease can start in arterial blood vessels in other parts of your body, particularly the brain, kidneys, or legs. This can lead to strokes, kidney failure, or restricted circulation in the legs and in extreme cases amputation. Other conditions of the heart and circulatory system include high blood pressure, heart attacks and varicose veins.

Almost all heart troubles can be avoided, or improved significantly by following some simple steps. To lessen your danger of heart disease, you are advised to eat a healthy diet, do not add an excessive amount of salt to your food, learn how to quit smoking, don’t drink a lo of alcohol, try an exercise every day, lose a few excess pounds (there’s plenty of quick weight loss diets to help you), and reduce your stress levels.

Green tea is is very good for you, and is thought to help reduce heart and circulatory disease, and makes a great addition to a detox diet. So far the evidence for these benefits is inconclusive, consuming green tea seems to be healthy, so it might be valuable trying along with other preventative actions.

We have heard a lot about cholesterol in the past decade, and with good reason. It appears that there is a very significant link between your cholesterol levels and your risk of heart and cardiovascular disease. By keeping these cholesterol numbers in check, we can make a big difference in our overall health. The problem is that cholesterol is not exactly a simple concept, in that there are two different cholesterol numbers that must be tracked. Couple that with the fact that one of these numbers needs to remain low, while the other should stay high. So which one is which, and how exactly do we get those numbers where we want them? The first step is to understand the two different types of cholesterol, and in this article we will address the issues of LDL cholesterol.

The “Bad” Cholesterol

It is true that LDL cholesterol has gotten a “bad” rap, which means that this is the type of cholesterol that needs to maintain a low number in order for you to maintain good health. LDL cholesterol is also known as low-density lipoproteins, and these lipoproteins can leave deposits of plaque on your arteries as they pass through your bloodstream. As the plaque builds, blood cannot pass through your system as efficiently and your heart has to work harder to pump the blood through your body. This strain on your heart is what increases your risk of heart and cardiovascular disease. Since this process is amplified when more of these lipoproteins accumulate in your blood, this is the type of cholesterol that you want to keep on the lower side to protect your ticker. Your target number for your LDL cholesterol should be 100 or less, and anything higher than 130 is cause for concern.

So how do you keep your LDL cholesterol at a healthy level? For most of us, the answer lies in healthy lifestyle choices, like a diet rich in fruits, vegetables and plenty of whole grains. It also means daily aerobic exercise that will keep the blood pumping and the lipoproteins passing through. Maintaining a healthy weight and avoiding unhealthy habits like smoking will also help to keep your LDL cholesterol level nice and low. For some, medication may be necessary to lower a number that has already gotten too high, if diet and exercise alone do not successfully bring the level down. However, these types of medications have their share of side effects and their advantages should be weighed carefully. Successfully bringing down your LDL cholesterol levels through any of these methods will lessen your risk of heart disease and lead you to a healthier way of life overall.

There is both good and bad cholesterol which means that it is important to be able to distinguish between each type and knows how it affects a person’s health and knows the ways and means to lower it in case such is required. The different types of cholesterol are LDL and HDL and the former is a bad type because when there is excess of it in a person’s blood it will build up in the inner walls of his or her arteries which can end up causing the blocking of the arteries and thus causes atherosclerosis that is not a desirable condition.

HDL In High Quantities Will Prevent Heart Attacks

However, the good form of cholesterol is HDL, which when present in high quantities will actually aid in preventing heart attacks, though when the level of HDL is low, it can put the person at risk of experiencing a heart attack. There is another aspect to cholesterol and that is triglyceride, which is a type of fat that is obtained from the food that you eat and which is also produced in the body, and when there is a high level of triglycerides, you are at risk of having high total cholesterol in which you can get high LDL as well as low HDL, which is bad for your health.

In order to test your cholesterol level, you may need to take a test that is aimed at measuring your lipoproteins which are sorted according to their density. In case of high density, the ratio of proteins compared to fat will be high and high density lipoproteins or HDL is the good cholesterol which does the work required to help unblock your arteries and which also helps in getting rid of unwanted fat from the body.

On the other hand, low density lipoproteins or LDL which along with very low density lipoproteins or VLDL and triglycerides make up the bad cholesterol, which in high numbers will cause your arteries to be clogged and results in a heart attack as well as other diseases related to the heart. Of course, bad as well as good cholesterol will vary from one person to another and the main factors that affect how much of it you may have are being overweight, diets with plenty of saturated fats as well as cholesterol and absence of sufficient exercises as well as hereditary conditions. Also, cholesterol will also go up as a person becomes older and to control the level of it in your body it is advised to eat healthy foods and take plenty of exercises.

If you are an adult over twenty years old it is important to have your cholesterol level checked about every five years to make sure you have what is considered to be a healthy cholesterol level. High cholesterol can cause heart disease and is a primary factor in people acquiring hardening of the arteries and causing heart attacks. It is very common these days for people to have their cholesterol levels checked. Doctors usually have their patients take a lipid profile test which checks the LDL (bad cholesterol), the HDL (good cholesterol) and the triglyceride level.

Healthy Cholesterol Level

Experts believe that if your overall cholesterol level is below 200mg/dl than you have a healthy cholesterol level and are considered to be at low risk for acquiring heart disease. It is difficult for people to achieve a healthy cholesterol level or keep an acceptable cholesterol level if they eat an unhealthy diet loaded with saturated fats or if they do not get enough exercise.

If your cholesterol test reveals a cholesterol level between 200 and 240 mg/dl you are placed in the category of people who are considered to have a moderate risk of getting heart disease. If your cholesterol test shows a cholesterol level over 240 mg/dl you are placed in the high risk category. People in the high risk category are thought to have about twice the risk of acquiring heart disease than those that have a healthy cholesterol level which is under 200 mg/dl.

If due to your high cholesterol level you are considered a high risk patient you should have an exercise plan created for you by an expert, reduce the saturated fat in your diet, eat healthy foods and if you still have a high cholesterol level your doctor might recommend drugs designed to lower cholesterol such as statins.

HDL the Good Cholesterol

To increase your HDL (good cholesterol) level, avoid smoking, get plenty of exercise and obtain a healthy bodyweight and avoid saturated fats. In the average size male, the HDL cholesterol level is between 40 and 50 mg/dl while in women the HDL range is from 50 to 60 mg/dl.

Your LDL (bad cholesterol) level is the best source for determining your risk of having a heart attack or having a stroke. It provides a better indication of your risk for heart disease than a total cholesterol level can provide. A LDL level under 100 mg/dl is preferred. A level of 130 to 159 is considered borderline high and 160 to 189 mg/dl is considered to be a high LDL level. A level at 190 or higher is considered by experts to be very high. In order to avoid heart disease, heart attacks and strokes you should have your cholesterol checked to find out if you have a healthy cholesterol level.

We know cholesterol is an important factor in staying healthy. There have been plenty of studies and reports over the past ten years that have linked high cholesterol numbers to an increased risk of heart and cardiovascular disease. But did you know that not all cholesterol needs to be low? In addition to the “bad” cholesterol that can stick to the walls of the arteries and cause plaque to develop, there is also “good” cholesterol that can help the body to rid itself of these deposits by helping to eliminate them through the liver. This type is called HDL cholesterol, and instead of bringing this number down, you should be striving to keep this count high. How high? A good HDL cholesterol number is one that is above 60. Anything lower than 40 is considered poor, and should be a cause for concern.

Raising the Numbers

If you are concerned about your HDL cholesterol, the next logical question would be how to raise that number higher? While there is plenty advice available on how to lower the “bad” LDL cholesterol number, there isn’t as much information available on how to raise the HDL cholesterol level. Part of the reason for this is that we probably don’t have as much control over this number. For example, women tend to have higher HDL cholesterol levels prior to the menopausal years, primarily due to the hormones in her system. For some, when it comes to your HDL cholesterol number, you’ve got what you’ve got. However, there have been some studies that have shown there are certain methods that might effectively raise this number somewhat.

A diet that is low in carbohydrates may increase the HDL cholesterol count by as much as 10%, so stock up on the fruits, veggies and whole grains. It may also be helpful to cut back on substances like salt and fat and limit your caloric intake. Adding soy protein to your diet may also increase your HDL cholesterol by 3% or so. Some studies have also shown that taking a daily vitamin supplement may help to raise the HDL levels significantly. You can also work to lower your LDL levels through a healthy diet, exercise and possible medications.

Cholesterol is a significant factor in heart disease, because the plaque deposits that can result from an unhealthy cholesterol number can make it more difficult for blood to pass through the arteries. This in turn forces your heart to work harder to pump the blood throughout your body, and thus puts a strain on this important organ. The end result can be a less healthy heart and a greater risk of heart attack, stroke and cardiovascular disease.

Zocor was designed to lower cholesterol levels by inhibiting the body from producing cholesterol which is a type of fat. Zocor cholesterol medicine has the ability to reduce the amount of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) also know as bad cholesterol and the total amount of cholesterol that is located in your blood. Zocor can reduce the risks of having a stroke, a heart attack and vascular disease by lowering your cholesterol level. It has the benefits of lowering your risk of developing heart disease and it helps to prevent hardening of the arteries.

People Who Should Not Take Zocor

If a woman is pregnant or is breast feeding her baby, she should not take Zocor. If a woman becomes pregnant during the time she is using Zocor she should tell her physician immediately that she has become pregnant. Some believe that birth defects can be caused by Zocor. People who have liver disease should not take Zocor cholesterol medicine and if people have an allergic reaction to Zocor they should stop taking the medication. If you have health problems such as diabetes, kidney disease, a muscle disorder, your thyroid is under reactive or if you know of any drugs that give you an allergic reaction you might not be a candidate for Zocor.

Follow the directions you have been given for taking Zocor cholesterol medicine and do not keep using the medication for a longer period than your physician recommnended. You should have your blood tested on a regular basis in order to determine if the medication is lowering your cholesterol level. You doctor might also want to check your liver function while you are using Zocor.

Study of Zocor

A study was conducted to research the effectiveness of zocor also known as simvastatin to reduce the level of cardiovascular risks. The study showed that people with diabetes who took 40 mg on a daily basis were able to lower the risk of having a first nonfatal heart attack and other major coronary events by 27 % regardless of their glucose and cholesterol levels. This study was included in the prestigious publication The Lancet in 2003. The study included almost six thousand men and women who were between 40 and 80 years of age and had diabetes. The study lasted five years and some people received Zocor cholesterol medicine and others were given a placebo. The group included 2,912 people who had not been diagnosed with a heart disease. 90 % of the patients who participated in the study had type 2 diabetes. The study also provided the good news that the patients who were taking Zocor cholesterol medicine were able to reduce their level of LDL cholesterol, on average by 39 mg/dl while they were in the trial. Everyone who has been diagnosed with heart disease or has a high level of cholesterol might consider taking Zocor to help reduce the possibility of having bypass surgery or angioplasty in order to clear their clogged arteries. You might want to ask your physician if Zocor cholesterol medicine can help you prevent having a heart attack or a stroke.

There has been plenty in the news about the evils of a high cholesterol level. It’s not just hype either; studies have shown that a high cholesterol number is directly linked to a higher risk of heart attack, stroke and cardiovascular disease. In order to live healthy, you need to get that number under control and for most of us that means to bring it lower. But how do you lower cholesterol? The good news is that there are plenty of options in how to lower cholesterol through lifestyle modifications and medication in certain circumstances.

You are What You Eat

Yes, it’s true. Your diet does indeed have a direct correlation to your overall health, no matter what your great uncle told you about eating bacon every day and living to a ripe old age of 96. Our diets today are simply not conducive to a healthy lifestyle, which is why we have seen a rise in obesity as well as an increase in conditions like diabetes and heart disease. There are plenty of ways to learn how to lower cholesterol through good diet choices. First, go for the fruits and vegetables first and foremost. Are you getting five a day? The USDA actually recommends five to nine servings of fruits and vegetables every day for optimum health.

Most of today’s diets do not include many whole grains either. We eat lots of bread and cereal products, but most of them are made from refined sugar and flour, which is not how to lower cholesterol. A good rule of thumb is to find breads that have plenty of grains and seeds actually visible on the slices. You also want to hunt for ingredient lists that contain words like “whole grains” or “whole wheat” to ensure that you are making your healthiest carbohydrate choices.

Get Moving!

Exercise is another component for how to lower your cholesterol, and daily exercise is the best by far. It’s not as hard to work aerobic activity into your day as you might think – how about a walk during your lunch hour or a bike ride around the neighborhood after work? Even a game of tag with the kids in the backyard can get your blood pumping, and that is what cardiovascular exercise is all about. Exercise will also help you to maintain a healthy weight, which is another key in how to lower cholesterol.

If these lifestyle modifications do not help you to get those cholesterol numbers down, your doctor also has medication options for you to consider. It is so important to learn how to lower cholesterol as a part of an overall healthy lifestyle.
